Chicago – Lake and City Views Make This Home Beautiful Inside and Out
Chicago, home to the sky scraping Sears Tower, also offers residents several breath taking options of their own. Our latest Chicago project was for a weekend retreat high rise home on beautiful Lake Shore Drive.
This home makes good use of both its city and lake views with over 15 large windows wrapping around the entire space. Our clients wanted a clean contemporary retreat that would be ideal for both weekend entertaining and relaxing. An exciting color palette of gray, citron, cream, purple, and black runs through the entire space with clean-lined furniture with sleek metal finishes. The refinished hardwood floors and stairway converted to hardwood add both warmth and color. A custom decorated doorway adds a bit of personality and a luxurious wool shag rug softens the space.
Northern Virginia – High Rise Home is Inspired by a Work of Art
When we met with our new clients in Arlington who had just purchased a high rise to take advantage of the metro area and proximity to Washington, DC, we were told that we had design freedom to create a beautiful space.
Our inspiration was one piece of art work that our clients loved. The contemporary abstract painting had an impressionist’s garden of colors featuring lively pinks and purples.
This new home now has custom designed rugs and loosely woven fabric window treatments with a dark bead trim. We took a set of classic French- designed high back chairs and transformed them with a photographic fabric that shows a floral pattern. The classic furniture is balanced with a contemporary chandelier hanging over the dining room table. The home’s floor plan features two bedrooms, one on each side of the space. We tied the two bedroom looks together using soothing blues and golds with similar furnishings to create restful spaces that still flowed with the rest of the home.
All Grown Up With a Mind of Their Own
When we got a call from one of our favorite Fairfax clients to redesign their children’s bedrooms, we knew that we had two tough customers to please — their children. This family waited until the kids were in their teens before investing in a heavy design project. What the children picked now would be with them until they left for college.
The girl’s room is a teen dream of vibrant turquoise, pink, and apple green with yellow accents. The double bed and chaise lounge add softness and a place to hide away with friends. The mirrored chest and dressers, custom made by one of our furniture makers, adds a bit of glam and shine without keeping everyone up at night. A custom designed and hand made Tibetan rug pulls the colors and designs together and feels great under bare feet.
The boy’s room is a step up from a room full of toys and race cars without being overly mannish and stoic. The design began with a custom made geometric patterned rug in blues and reds, a custom storage ottoman, and custom made night stands and dresser. One of the most interesting features was a custom designed and built Lego cart on wheels that can be tucked away or moved into the center of room.
In the middle of the two rooms is a shared bathroom. The daughter picked the colors and fabrics and the son picked the artwork. A mixture of colorful florals and nautical designs, set in a neutral space, works with the two bedrooms and is something both children like.

Italy Buying Trip
The tourists have left, the high season is over and we’re heading to Italy to snag some deals and some inspiration.
Italy is what I call a textural country, a blend of stucco and stone, modern sleek design, and pastoral beauty. It’s a haven for designers like me who are looking for the newest designs in fabrics, leather, and art.
This year’s trip will take us to Venice where we will explore the famous Murano glass factory, Florence, where we will see what is new in leather design, and along the way we will enjoy several of the Tuscan frattoria’s – farm house vineyards that produce wine and feed hungry travelers. These beautiful estates have their own easy design that is popular in many parts of the U.S. We’ll be taking lots of photos for inspiration to share with our clients.
